So, I checked out a fairly new pub right near me for lunch today, and had a very nice Buffalo Trace tasting (Blanton’s/Eagle Rare/EH Taylor Small Batch) , followed by a couple of Eagle Rare’s.
But the other tasting that they offer (for $50) included a half ounce of Pappy 10 year, plus two others that I’ve forgotten.
So, question is, do you think it’s worth it to try the Pappy next time? I’m curious - it’s got a ridiculous reputation, which is intriguing. But it wouldn’t surprise me if it didn’t live up to it.

It is always worth putting a sweet bo urbo n to your lips.

Hey I just had 2+ Eagle Rares, plus some other good stuff, so you’re preaching to the choir.
Next time I go there, I gotta try the Pappy - they brag about having it.

For bragging rights, yes. Otherwise, just go pick up some Weller 12 and that’s very close and made from the same mash.

Agreed, on all accounts. When I tried it, I thought it was good, but that there are plenty less expensive options (Weller 12 among them) that are just as tasty and are way easier to find.

If I recall correctly, the 10 year is the Rip Van Winkle , which is around $55 a bottle without markup ). Unless you get to taste some of the Pappy’s (15 or 20+ year? ), I don’t think it’s worth it.
Personally I’d take the $50 and buy a bottle of Weller Reserve (~$35 and made right next to the V an W inkle stuff). You get a lot more tastings a few bucks left over for dinner .

I love me some Jefferson’s Ocean but I’ve only found one guy who had it. I can’t remember finding an establishment that carried it, store, bar or restaurant.

I’d hope it’s good at $33.33 per fluid ounce.
I dunno. If that’s your thing, you feel you’ll potentially appreciate it, and the loss of $50 isn’t a huge deal, it’s probably worth a shot... Pun intended.
Even if you walk away unimpressed and feeling duped, at least you’ll know for yourself .

I really wasn't a fan of pappy the one time I scored a free sip when I worked at a fancier restaurant. But I was also much younger and didn't have nearly the palette that I do now. As others have said, try it if you're into bourbon just to say you have, but I certainly wouldn't spend $50 for half an ounce personally, although I'd love another free sip to see if I'd enjoy it more almost a decade older.

For bragging rights, I’m thinking what the hell. The tasting that I did have was pretty good for $15.
![]() 07/16/2018 at 17:27 |

Well, the $50 was for a tasting of 3 different high end bourbons, I just don’t remember the other two (one was made by Woodford, that’s all I recall).
Definitely not something I’d make a habit of, but maybe just to say I’ve tried it.

Hmm, not familiar with that one at all...

This is the only correct take.

I think you’re right about the 10 year- - I didn’t look it up at the time, but it struck me that the more famous Pappys are aged a lot longer than 10 years.

No.
You should spend between $20 and $30 for a bottle of alcohol. Anything less than $20 is probably crap. Anything more than $30 is probably not good enough to justify the extra cost.

I struck bourbon gold the last time I was in London. They had 5 variants of the Van Winkle family (ORVW, Van Winkle 12 yr, Pappy 15, 20, 23) available as a flight of 1/2 pours, as well as Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel (not readily available in the US). There was an almost overwhelming agreement of ranking from best to last: 20 yr, 23 yr, 12, 15, 10.

Oooh, that’s a murderer’s row that I’d love to try, as long as it didn’t cost too much.
And I think it’s actually the ORVW that was in the tasting that I saw.

Long story short, they age it for 12 years, then age it again on a ship cruising around the world.

Doesn’t hurt to try it. But $50 for a half an ounce? Not with my money.
This is my preferred whiskey:
And the entire bottle sells for around CAD$27.
![]() 07/16/2018 at 18:25 |

Is it really 12+ years? They have it near me, but if I recall there were no age statements, just ‘been round the world’ a few times or something like that. Seemed a bit gimmicky.
I was intrigued, but not at $85 / bottle for the cask s trength . I’ll stick with the small batch for $35.

I see that Corvair all the time in Villa Park. The guy DDs it, even in the winter. Makes me happy every time I see it. Hopefully I'll meet the guy some day.

The flight cost around 55 GBP (70 USD approx.), and I was dumbfounded at that price. I’ve seen it available Stateside for a LOT higher than that.

I thought I read that somewhere. This video says eight before it goes on the ship. Then I think I read three years on the ship but who knows. It was so good. I may get some on my way home. It may upset the missus. She’ll have to deal with it.

I was wondering if it was the same one you see! This was in downtown Hinsdale- you can see th e Grant Square sign in the background. Looked to be in good shape too.

That’s the one. It’s in good shape, but i ts definitely a driver. He used to have a light blue one with a lot of rust. I’ve seen this guy DDing Corvair for nine years now. I respect that.

I noticed online they have the regular Ocean for $65. I may give that a go....do like my briny ‘island’ whiskys.

I would take a flyer on that for $ 70. No brainer.

That’s amazing. I wonder if he works where I saw the car? It was parked far out where employees might park.
![]() 07/16/2018 at 21:22 |

Well it’s 3 half ounces for $ 50, I just don’t remember what the others were.
Still pricey certainly, but maybe as a 1 time treat.
![]() 07/16/2018 at 21:23 |

Eh, it depends on taste and preferences. This was at a bar, so you’re not getting a bottle at that price.
And once in a while it’s nice to have a treat to see what the fuss is all about.

Could be. He's always dressed professionally when I see him. I'd guess he's about your age, or a little older maybe.

If you’re in London, head to Hammersmith and go to the Melody inside St. Paul’s Hotel. That’s where I had the flight.

Yeah if you’ve got the cash for it try it once just too see. I just didn't really care for it fresh out of college but I would maybe feel differently now that it's been almost 10 years.
